my mother walks
in our family cemetery
to stay alive
three fields of graves
that represent
three centuries
of family
and friends
three centuries
of love and war
the church moved closer
to the train depot nearly
ten decades before
but here in the elysian green field
stone atop stone generations rest
and the newly departed consider eternity
under trees who remember
a time before Lincoln’s presidency
some of these graves hold confederate sins
and northern lovers
falling for a girl from kentucky
is always the end of you
my grandmother was the cemeterian
now my mother keeps the scrolls
i am alive
here floating in the form of heaven
with no impending plans of making
a contribution
