hesitant
yellow leaves
tumble from the sky
fall down the piano keys
a wet swirl
of early autumn
descending
the trees are playing jazz
and i imagine
squirrels wearing sweaters
rain cold
on still summer bare limbs
as my protective pit bull chases
a beagle away from
the grateful chicken coop
there are few hummingbirds left
a marked lack of nectar
as there are so few blossoms
remaining to choose from
cooperation forgotten
as need gives way to
competition
nature senses
the coming winter
she knows from seeing
ages of us spring forth and die
we are somehow less prepared
this calendar year
today
is for brutal harbingers
buckling down
bracing
waving goodbye
and accepting
no one survives
the word random
he said the earth will shrug
as do i
there are eggs to fry
