talking softly in a loud hallway

i only remember
how clean
your skin smelled that day
a light cologne and you in sensible cotton
the way you embraced the books in your arms
as if they should be me
shifting the wait
of your next cup of coffee
from one foot to the other
talking softly
in a loud hallway
too near a major intersection
for either of us to find comfort
standing in painful proximity
a skill honed to perfection
knowing it is the closest
we will ever be
fainting goats
todd rundgren
where life occurs
sewing seeds
that will become
a friendship
of oak solidity
shared shade trees
