his heroine

he writes me love notes
that read

“I’ve decided you are a character who walked out of an Elmore Leonard novel, or will walk out of one of mine.”

he looks at me as if he knows
i’m hiding a gun in the lace of my stocking

he has the nerve to tell me

as i place the bourbon glass
to my mouth

my legs go on for days

and on all counts

he is right
