fat man and little boy

i have married twice
the first marriage
was the result of brainwashed stupidity
and the desire to have a household
with two parents who respected each other
living within it
not beasts of burden

it would have worked had he not been
a halloween masked demon
and i a foolish child

the second
was for love and a common cause
but poor health and geography
depleted it

they both ended
in a mushroom cloud

how happy i am to know
my actions
will spare the world
nuclear winter
by simply never again taking a vow

i’ll fry pork chops tonight
and listen to war pigs
as i smile

this is not my beautiful house

we sew ourselves
to the expectations of others
with our bank accounts
towel racks
and arteries
faces melting
into an unreflecting pool
of lost identity
then spend our lives
doing the math
on the height of bridges
child support
the poundage of a squandered life
and how many refills remain

open letter to my first husband, the steaming pile of potential

please know
they’re growing up well
in spite of you

…and the lack of you

boys who stand taller
than shadows cast

divorce papers

for better or worse
you know you’ve
truly gotten into
a man’s head
when he writes
poetry about you

one day my ex lovers will build
a memorial library
