we are minerals
and death
sinewy tongued
carbon based
monstrosities of chemistry
capable of love
hate
warheads
television and
entropy
hubris enough to murder a planet
and want more leg room on airplanes
we would find a way
to kill the stars
if they weren’t dead
already

there are truths in the stars
i cannot tell him with words
circumstance a circus
inexplicable eventualities
why i become sick
when i travel away
why my eyes are amber secrets
he will learn
we exist in a theatre of fleeting hearts
lost moments wind swept
as sure as
this poem will drown in a pool of tears
a stone sunk to the bottom
of a forgotten day
we humans have felt
out of control
for so many revolutions of the planet
our coping skills
have evolved into chemicals
concocting poison
for every pest found bothersome
be they insects
stains
headaches
or other humans
we kill the source of our irritation
now the innocent bystander bees
are falling too dead to feed us
but never fear
after the comet comes
when every human footprint
has been filled
with fire and ash
the earth will surely shrug
clock out
now that it’s work is done
then go down to the corner bar
to have a drink with the sun
the earth will shrug
no matter this
humankind
first steps
first kisses
wedding dresses
last wishes
regardless of
tears shed
smiles beamed
daisies plucked
embraces
mouths entwined
prayers sent to heaven
without reverence for
photos taken
muses breathing
words written
love given
in spite of
tongue lashings
burns inflicted
bells tolled
daggers plunged
starving bellies
wars waged
before the world
spins out of orbit
for lack of its mistress moon
we will cease to be
and
in
this
moment
the earth will shrug
